Your voice is a fundamental part of your toolbox when it comes to your career as a powerful professional speaker.  This requires training, practice, and experience.

Speaking is the new competitive advantage in business and a vital component in developing your executive presence or efficacy as a teacher or presenter. Learning a vocal technique supports you in the delivery of your message, allowing you freedom to express yourself.

Whoever your target audience - students, clients, or workshop attendees – speakers in possession of a clear, healthy, and melodious voice have the edge in their ability to persuade, inform and motivate.

We will explore the physicality of the speaking process and through the consistent application of simple techniques, you can develop a technique which will protect and enhance your voice.

Drawing on my training and experience as an opera singer and actor, we take the voice as the starting point. The vocal principles between singing and speaking have distinct parallels.   By employing physical and vocal exercises used in operatic singing training, you will learn to free your voice from unconscious habits that can lead to vocal strain, and to develop a speaking technique that will give you confidence in your abilities.

Taking the time to focus on your voice and reap the benefits - the space to pause, breathe and build confidence in yourself and your ability to communicate.  Equally, the techniques and ideas we explore can be employed in challenging situations, or when dealing with difficult people.  Learning supportive breath work and how to pace your speech can strengthen your ability to be calm and collected in stressful situations, while having a beneficial effect on lowering stress levels, increasing self-awareness and presence – valuable outcomes in both in your work and personal life.

VOCAL TECHNIQUE TRAINING

Presenter

Breath work - Consistent airflow is fundamental to vocal freedom and health.  Breathing exercises:

  • build stamina

  • release vocal tension

  • support the voice when speaking or projecting the voice

Physicality - A voice housed in a tense body will always sound restricted.  We explore physical exercises for relaxation and flexibility. You will learn to develop an awareness of your internal landscape and an ability to identify and release areas of tension in the body. We look at how to maintain the integrity of your physicality whether speaking while sitting or standing.

Vocal exercises target specific muscles and build vocal resonance.  We will look at:

  • Placement of the voice and how to eliminate any breathiness

  • Articulation and diction

  • Bringing vocal technique into text

  • Vocal projection

  • Tone – depth and colour of voice

PRESENTATION SKILLS

We will explore:

  • How to mark up and prepare a lecture/presentation

  • How to break down and practice your speech employing your vocal technique

  • Tone, pace, prosody, how to engage the listener with your voice

  • Delivering Presentations/Lectures - from preparation to performance

  • Trouble shooting and contingency plans for the presentation

  • Nerves and how to overcome them

  • How to connect with your audience

  • Flexible presenting - How to deliver on camera, in person.

  • Develop executive presence

  • Facing the audience - the importance of storytelling

  • Delivery tone - who are you talking to and how do you want them to respond

  • Being your authentic self when speaking
